What is a user? How do I create a user account?

 You will need to create a user account before you can take any action in The MLC Portal. The permissions within that user account determine which actions you can perform.  For more information on each user permission, please read our Help Center article here

You only need to create a user account if:

  • You manage your own catalog as a self-administered songwriter, composer or lyricist
  • You are a publisher or administrator that collects mechanical royalties on behalf of a writer
  • Please note: If you work for a publisher, your employer may add you as a user or you may have already been added if your publisher has an HFA online account.

NOTE: If you are a writer that is fully administered by a third party, you do not need to create a user account.

Self-administered songwriter, composer or lyricist
  • Go to The MLC Portal and click "Sign Up" in the top right-hand corner.
  • You will need to go through an identity verification check at sign-up.
  • If your verification is successful, you will be taken through a quick onboarding that shows you how The MLC Portal works.
  • After onboarding, you can create a Member (the person or entity that is authorized to administer musical works and receive digital audio mechanical royalties related to their use), as well as add other users to your account.
  • Publisher

    There are two ways to create an account.

    1. You can sign up yourself by following the instructions below:

    • Go to The MLC Portal and click "Sign Up" in the top right-hand corner.
    • You will need to go through an identity verification check at sign-up.
    • If your verification is successful, you will be taken through a quick onboarding that shows you how The MLC Portal works.
    • After onboarding, you can create a Member (the person or entity that is authorized to administer musical works and receive digital audio mechanical royalties related to their use), as well as add other users to your account.

    2. A Super User in your organization adds you as a user.

    • Please note: If you are added as a user this way, you will only be able to take the actions designated by the level of permission you are assigned. For more information about your user permissions, reach out to your account admin.

    Publisher or self-administered songwriter with an HFA online account who opted-in to sharing your data with The MLC during summer 2020 but never created your account
    • Go to The MLC Portal
    • Click "Forgot password?" and follow the prompted steps.
      • Please note: You will need to use the same email address that is associated with your HFA online account.

    Once your account has been activated, please check to make sure your musical works data in The MLC Portal is accurate and complete, and register any additional musical works of yours that you don’t see included in your Portal account.
