What is a Performing Rights Organization (PRO)?

PRO stands for “Performing Rights Organization.” A PRO ensures that songwriters and publishers get paid for the use of their works by collecting exclusively public performance royalties on behalf of the rights owner. PROs do not collect digital audio mechanical royalties or synchronization royalties.

Examples of PROs in the U.S. are ASCAP, BMI, GMR and SESAC.
