What is a music publisher?

A music publisher is a person or entity that controls how a musical work is used and monetized. They own the musical work copyright. Publishers promote their writers’ works to licensing opportunities with recording artists, film, and television in order to earn revenue.

If a writer has not entered into an agreement to assign their copyrights to a third-party publisher, the writer is the publisher.
