Tips for Identity Verification
Follow these steps to ensure your identity verification goes smoothly the first time.
Clearly capture your ID
- Use a mobile device if possible
- Mobile cameras tend to produce clearer images with better autofocus and less glare than webcams.
- Using a mobile device minimizes upload issues.
- Take photos in bright, even lighting
- Avoid dark rooms and shadows.
- Avoid overhead lights that create glare.
- Soft, natural light (near a window but not in direct sun) works best.
- Hold your device steady
- Pause briefly to let the camera autofocus.
- Don’t move the ID while taking the photo.
- Make sure none of the edges are cropped out.
- Make sure the orientation is the same for both photos
- If you photograph the front horizontally, photograph the back horizontally too.
- Mismatched orientation (one vertical, one horizontal) is a common cause of failed verification.
- Avoid filters, glare, and obstructions
- Don’t place the ID on reflective surfaces or near bright windows. Tilt the ID slightly if glare persists.
- Keep your fingers away from text, barcode, and holograms.
- Do not apply filters or digital enhancements of any kind.
- Use your physical ID – not a screen shot or photocopy
- Always photograph the original government-issued document directly.
- Screenshots, printed copies, or photos taken of a screen are not accepted.
- Check your state’s latest ID format
For Texas, Hawaii, and any other states that recently changed layouts:- Make sure the REAL ID star and any updated features are fully visible.
- Take extra care with clarity and orientation.
