Can I register an AI-generated work with The MLC?

The MLC follows U.S. copyright law and guidance issued by the U.S. Copyright Office. The MLC's registration eligibility standards follow current copyright law, not independent determinations made by The MLC.

Under current guidance of the U.S. Copyright Office:

  • Musical works that include meaningful human authorship may be eligible for copyright protection and can be registered with The MLC.
  • Musical works that are entirely generated by AI, meaning they lack sufficient human authorship, are not eligible for copyright protection and cannot be registered with The MLC.

Can The MLC help me determine if my work qualifies for registration?

No,The MLC does not independently assess whether a specific work meets the legal threshold for human authorship, and cannot provide legal interpretations regarding authorship or copyright eligibility.

If you have questions about whether your work qualifies for copyright protection, we recommend reviewing the U.S. Copyright Office's published guidance or consulting with legal counsel.
